School-based occupational therapists provide assistance to students with deficits in the areas of fine motor, visual-perception, cognitive, and sensory-processing skills. Social, and psychological factors, along with the school environment, are considered when making recommendations for students. A school-based occupational therapist may provide the following services:
- Assistance with handwriting to help correct letter formation, reversals, or spacing issues.
- Consultation with teachers, paraprofessionals, and families so that activities can be carried out at school and home leading to greater success.
- Offer suggestions for classroom design, where to seat a child, or how students can organize their personal space to improve attention in class.
- Provide sensory diets for students with sensory-processing issues.
